Swimming and diving are the biggest new feature in Nintendo’s popular Switch title, but players won’t be able to just jump right in upon booting up the game. There are a few simple steps to take before you’re able to swim in the ocean.
The first is updating your Animal Crossing: New Horizons game to version 1.3. Your Nintendo Switch will usually update your titles automatically, but if it hasn’t, you’ll need to press the plus button over New Horizons, then select “Software Update,” then “via the internet” to make sure you’re on the latest version.
Once you’ve booted up the game, Isabelle will tell you about being able to swim in the waters around your island. But you’ll need to purchase the proper attire to do so.
A wetsuit is what you’ll need, and you can purchase one in either the Nook Brothers’ shop or using Nook Shopping in the Resident Services terminal.
In the shop, the wetsuit is located in the drawers where the Nook brothers sell tools and other items. It’ll cost 3,000 Bells, but it’ll allow players to explore new areas of their island.
The Resident Services terminal also sells a wet suit for 3,000 Bells, but it comes in different patterns. A new pattern will appear periodically, so you can keep checking back for the style that you like. It should be noted that these wetsuits will be sent to your home and that process usually takes about a day—so, if you want to get swimming right away, we recommend buying one at the shop first.
Once you’ve changed your attire to the wetsuit, simply press A from the beach or nearby rocks to hop into the water.
Keep pressing A to swim around, and if you see a shadow or bubbles coming to the surface, you can press Y to dive and check it out. Your character will automatically pluck any sea creature that they find while diving.
These sea creatures range from star fish to eels and much more. These creatures have their own page in the Critterpedia and can be donated to Blathers over at the museum. You can also meet a new visitor named Pascal who will give you seasonal DIY Recipes.
